Church of Monte Calvario
The church of Monte Calvario dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows is situated in dominant position on the homonymous hill overlooking the village of Scheggia. It was built in 1682 for watching over the relic of the Holy Cross, donated by a pious matron of the place and the construction works were completed in 1729 year of the consecration of the building. The church, characterized externally by a small entrance arcade and topped by a cupola, houses within two altars.
On the main altar is venerated the Blessed wooden Crucifix dating from the sixteenth century and which was exposed on May 3 each year to coincide with the solemn procession. In the altar of the Virgin of Sorrows, located in the homonymous chapel is preserved a statue of the Virgin, greatly venerated by the people of Scheggia. In this chapel there is also the ashes of Don Pietro Battistini dead in the sanctuary in the odor of sanctity.
In ancient times there was a third altar, long since demolished, which was venerated an image representing the Holy Trinity.
